This guide was assembled from three decades of notes, workshop conversations, and small observations gathered on the streets of Milan, Florence, Naples, and Rome. It does not pretend to be a technical manual for cobblers. It is, instead, an attempt to write down something Italians rarely explain out loud, because they were never taught it in words — they absorbed it, the way one absorbs a dialect, by hearing it spoken every day at home.Guido Valli spent twenty-eight years buying leather for a small Florentine workshop before turning to writing.
