Serving as Consul in 63 BCE, he famously defended the Roman Republic during times of intense political betrayal and civil war. Following the rise of Julius Caesar and his own subsequent political exile, Cicero turned to philosophy, translating Greek thought into Latin and producing foundational works on ethics, politics, and theology.
