In 1978, frightened by reports of Soviet psychic research, the U.S. Army quietly created GRILL FLAME, a secret unit of soldiers trained to spy with their minds. From a windowless room at Fort Meade, they targeted Soviet shipyards and the American hostages in Tehran, and searched for General Dozier, kidnapped by the Red Brigades in Verona. Drawing on declassified CIA and Army documents, this book reveals how the program was born on verbal orders, why it was hidden behind a meaningless codename, and how it survived budget cuts by changing its name, until history finally caught up with it.
