The Balli Saga

The Ballí Saga details the expansive history of the prominent Ballí family, pioneering Spanish aristocrats who shaped the lower Rio Grande Valley and South Texas. Originating from European roots, the family became influential settlers in the 1700s, amassing massive land grants from the King of Spain.Central to the narrative is Rosa María Hinojosa de Ballí, recognized as the first "cattle queen" of Texas, who masterfully managed over a million acres of land. Her son, Padre José Nicolás Ballí, was a foundational developer and the original grantee of the coastal barrier island that still bears his name: Padre Island. The text spans centuries of geopolitical shifts—from Spanish rule to Mexican independence, and the U.S. annexation of Texas. It chronicles their enduring legacy and the modern legal battles fought by descendants over lost ancestral mineral rights.
