Maradick at Forty / A Transition

This is a wonderfully atmospheric novel with memorable locations and characters (some being very odd indeed!). A man in midlife crisis travels to a remote Cornish village with his wife. The strangely happy village where drinking is rife and the people are very open begins to affect the actions of the visitors - to the point of changing their character. The very oddness of the story ensures that it stays long in the memory.
