The Medieval Rose Windows

The term “rose window” commonly refers to a circular window on the facades of Romanesque and Gothic churches. Originally called  “oculus,” it dates back to the 4th-5th century and is found in both religious and secular buildings. Thanks to the Cosmati marble masters, rose windows became essential in the construction of medieval churches, especially in Rome. In addition to their decorative function, rose windows symbolize beauty and the perfection of Creation, recalling the heavens  and the mystery of God-light, uniting both Christian and secular values. Light, symbol of the Divine Revelation and life, penetrates sacred places through small openings, urging contemplation. Rose windows represent the esoteric nature of things, their hidden meaning and their uniqueness that goes beyond a superficial understanding. With reference to the Indian mandala, which is a symbol of meditation and a circle that encloses the lotus,  rose windows share its nature as a labyrinth: complex paths in continuous evolution between the periphery and the center, in harmony with the eternal cycles of the cosmos.
